Future Harvard Admits: How To Take AP Tests

May 28th, 2009

All high school students are familiar with Advanced Placement (AP) tests. Some students we are addressing are international students (click here for more information). Others are involved in IB programs. However, most students we are addressing will take AP classes and tests.

Here are a few good things to know about AP testing:

1) It’s a good idea to take as many AP classes as time allows. When your transcript includes a lot of AP classes, it makes a statement about your diligence a academic ability.

2) Begin taking your AP tests right away. They aren’t that difficult, and it’s good to get them under your belt.

3) Don’t overdo taking AP tests. It’s always a good idea to take an AP class, but you don’t have to take multiple AP tests and get entirely perfect scores to be accepted at Harvard. Just as I say regarding SAT and GPA scores, you only need to pass a certain level.

4) Taking too many AP tests can mess up your average. It is better to take a few tests and really concentrate on making the best scores possible than take a lot of tests and do well on some and not so well on others. Some schools, like Yale, prefer to see a good showing on a few attempts rather than a scattered showing on multiple attempts.

5) If you have some AP tests planned, but haven’t taken them yet, be sure to note that on your Common Application. The fact that this information is beneficial to your application is a little known insider’s tip.

Remember these three tips: Take a lot of AP classes. Get your tests out of the way early. Go for a few high quality test results, rather than lots of mediocre test results. By using this strategy, you will do well.

When you score high on your AP tests, it lets colleges know that you are able to manage demanding courses at the college level. Ivy League schools want to see that you are able to deliver academic excellence. It is a definite must for getting into the school of your dreams.
